This is NOT a joke, even though it reads like one.
In protest of a new state law that allows guns on college campuses, students at the University of Texas in Austin plan on carrying dildos on August 24, 2016 - the first day of the fall semester.
Supported by the hashtag #CocksNotGlocks, the students are protesting S.B. 11, which is commonly referred to as the "campus carry" law. The law, which already prompted one UT-Austin professor to resign, has not sat well with some students. Jessica Jin, a UT alumni, launched Campus (DILDO) Carry in response to the law. "You're carrying a gun to class?" Jin wrote in the description for the group's Facebook page. "Yeah well I'm carrying a HUGE DILDO," calling the event a “strap in”.
Jin said a dildo is "[j]ust about as effective at protecting us from sociopathic shooters, but much safer for recreational play.”
She added, "I need this proliferation of dildos to offer people a visual representation of what it would be like if we all carried guns. It should look ridiculous to you. That is the point. This is America; if guns and bloodshed don’t wake people up, a public celebration of sexuality may just do the trick.”
So far more than 10,000 people have confirmed they will attend on Facebook to “strap gigantic swinging dildos to backpacks in protest of campus carry.”
Jin has received multiple threats online, which led her to contact the Austin Police Department.
